Hey there, and welcome back. I so appreciate you stopping by my little corner of confidence.
Earlier this summer I was shopping with a client at the Outlet Shoppes of Atlanta off of the 575 and the conversation struck me to the core. We were wrapping up for the afternoon and she said, “I love all these outfits, I feel so great in them. I wish I felt just as great when I took them off. I can’t seem to get passed the image underneath.”
My heart sank, I knew that feeling all too well at one time, and I know many of my clients have grappled with the same thing. Clothes can be such a fun and powerful tool, but can quickly become a band-aid if you’re not already feeling confident in your own skin, which is why I intentionally focus on building my client’s confidence from the inside out.
As mentioned last time, I want to empower you with unshakeable self-confidence, and often confidence waivers when you have body image insecurities big or small.
It doesn’t matter, if it’s self-consciousnesses around something like acne, balding, weight, or something as extreme as a traumatic facial burn, it can be triggering when you look at yourself in the mirror and it will cause damage to your overall confidence.
To combat those nagging insecurities, I want to offer you a simple mental tool you can use right now to stop the mental war you’re having in the mirror.
The physiologist, Carl Rogers, said ” the curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
Simply put, self-acceptance is the most effective and loving way to begin creating new patterns, perceptions, and yes even a new reality.
The new reality is having a genuine appreciation for the current and amazing body and self you have. (aka self-confidence)
Not, sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s a whole easier to focus on the things you don’t like, than the things you do…
So what does that mean?
Unless you’re intentionally thinking positive thoughts when you look in the mirror, there’s a good chance your thoughts immediately go to all those nuances you don’t like about yourself.
Ever heard the phrase “what you focus on grows?”
Well m’dear, it’s a very real thing – the power of your mind. And unfortunately, most of us are habitually thinking about the negatives we see without even realizing it.
My challenge for you today:
The next time you look in the mirror, give yourself an extra moment. Find one thing about yourself that you love and say it out loud in the mirror (multiple times if possible); allow yourself to smile and breathe in that positive feeling.
You’re probably rolling your eyes at this moment because this sounds so cheesy, but cheesy or not, it’s POWERFUL when done intentionally and consistently.
That’s it m’dear, that’s the first step to stopping your mental war with the mirror and truly and peacefully enjoying the body you have today.
Don’t forget to check back into my little corner of the virtual 575 soon. I’ll be sharing best practices and tips to safely shop online as we head into fall and even the holiday shopping season!
